Day 7 Report

Day 7 - 18/4/08 - Conondale

Bit of a slack day today with lots of working with the media including the Channel 7 helicopter. It was only 13km advance but there was some extra pulling up and down hills for the cameras. The total so far is 255km. As we are at the Conondale school where I start paddling the Mary in earnest, that can be taken as the distance from West End in Brisbane to paddleable water in the Mary River.

Speaking of Mary, one of the local women called Mary rode her horse along with us for a few kilometres today. I have to say hers was the first horse I have ever seen with “No Dam” on its rump. Mary is an affected landholder but she says come what may, this Traveston debacle has taught her that she must take an interest in all sorts of issues that mean a lot to people.

We were welcomed into the Mary River catchment by a host of people. Steve Burgess was just one from the MRCC, the Landcare people gave us a tree and goodies, but there were so many wonderful people that I don’t remember them all. It is a humbling experience to see so many people hurting from a bad government decision and to be able to help in a small way. Keep up the fight folks, I am but a last minute ring in. You have been doing the work and you deserve better.

Today at the school was fun and felt like old times to John and I. This was the first time we had set the wombat up together since Tailem Bend last September and we enjoyed showing off the kayak again.

It is raining and we are under a large roof at the Conondale school so we don’t need the tent tonight. We will drive up to Maleny and see what their pub food is like.
