.Dry Murray-Darling slows kayakers journey

ABC Radio Brisbane 19th July 2007

A Brisbane man kayaking along the Murray-Darling river system from Brisbane to Adelaide says he has done just as much walking as paddling.

After nearly two months of travelling, Steve Posselt has arrived in Bourke in north-western New South Wales.

The 54-year-old says the drought has made sections of his journey tough, but he is confident he can make it to Adelaide before the end of the year.

"I wanted to be there before Christmas, but I think with a bit of luck I'll be there early December, maybe late November," he said.

"A lot depends on the conditions, and when the rivers are low they hold me up a lot because I have to get over log jams and I'll finish up being stuck on mud and all sorts of things."

Mr Posselt is making the trip in an effort to raise awareness to global warming and what it is doing to the struggling water system.

But it is not only the lack of water that is holding up his progress.

"One of the interesting things that I do that does actually take a bit of time is I stop and I talk to school kids on the way about global warming and climate change and the fact that sustainability is the issue," he said.xt
