Day 29 Report

Day 29 - 10/5/08 - Breakfast Creek to West End Finish

The city is not where I belong. It was interesting and exciting to paddle through the city centre but give me the bush any day. The trip was only 12km and I paddled under the Goodwill Bridge right on 11.30am as programmed.

As shown in the photos there were plenty of supporters from as far away as Maryborough and Hervey Bay. They were strung out over a lot of the river bank but were a pretty noisy bunch when they got together. A big thanks to everyone who turned up and who supported the trip along the way.

Channel Seven were there of course, having been the television station to take an active interest in the whole trip. Other media were there and the story was in the Sunday Mail and the Sun Herald as well as other places. Local media throughout the trip were superb.

Ian Mackay and Kevin Ingersole from the Save the Mary River Group spoke very well and thanked me for my support. David Hood from the Environmental College of the Institution of Engineers spoke about the trip and Senator Andrew Bartlett as usual gave a sensible and balanced presentation on some of the reasons why this dam is a bad thing.

Where to from here? This trip signals the start of the fight. So far many good people have been involved in presenting the science but this has been falling on deaf ears. I simply cannot understand why government has got it so wrong but I do know that if they do build the dam many of them will regret it before they die. History will judge them very poorly.

I will start with requesting meetings with Peter Garrett and Elizabeth Nosworthy. I will write a personal letter to Anna Bligh. We will try to get an action group in Brisbane and we will raise the profile nationally. This dam is far worse than the Franklin and yet it is under the radar of just about everyone.

This web site will revert to the normal K4e home page but updates on our progress will be posted from time to time. Thank you to all of you who have taken an interest in the trip. We cannot let this abomination go ahead.
